Friday night lights

Westlake v. Cedar Park.

Why I was really in New York last week

I have been trying to keep this as quiet as possible, but there was a reason why I was in New York last week. The cat is pretty much out of the bag, so I thought I would share it with you.

Taxmasters

Chances are you have seen the commercial of the big guy with a beard who says he can bail you out if the IRS is wearing you out. For the longest time I thought this was a local company. The TV Commercial just looks like it is a local company. Maybe they planned it that way, if they did, they are brilliant. It fooled me for years. They are not a local, small time company, they are huge. I saw the exact same spot with this guy while I was in New York City last week. Nice job Taxmasters, you fooled me. I hope I never have to call you, in fact if I did, I wouldn't, but you fot me, you got me good.

My Favorite Email of the Day

This was sent to our boss. This is what we deal with. Your comments please. I won't even try to defend us because it will sound too defensive.

I gotta tell ya - I've been listening to JB & Sandy for 7 years from 6 to10 (after I get to work even) and I think I've found a new morning radiohome at another station simply because Jb & Sandy are never there - Ilistened to the other station last week when they were on yet anothervacation and now I've just heard that they are off again tomorrow! Mygoodness, I work for the school system and they get more vacation than I do- plus they are never there at 6am.
Good luck to them and the show (when it is actually on, they are quiteentertaining) and I'm sure you guys (especially them) could care less aboutonly one listener but I'm otta here. Keep in mind for every one of me thatspeaks my mind, how many others there are who say nothing - just switchthe dial.

Where am I?

No PC right now so I can't post your comments about the previous post. However, you guys are sharp. It was the back of a first class seat on American Airlines. I have been saving my miles forever and finally decided to use them. I didn't fit in but it was really nice. Pics coming later.

Glad to see we aren't alone

Alex told me that I had to check out this clip on the KLBJ Website. I'm glad I did, because now I know we aren't alone in our disdaine for the Quarter Millionaire. Charlie cracks me up, Dale is the perfect antagonist. Nice work boys.

Also, please send your comments. I love reading them.

More Randomness

I have been on a bit of a fitness kick lately. What I am about to tell you is very embarassing, but I figured I would say it on the radio, but since I am not on the air this week (vacation) I thought I would share it here. On Monday afternoon, I did the "Biggest Loser" workout DVD, and it kicked my butt. Look, I am no fatty, but I sure aint no skinny. I did this thing and my butt and legs are still sore. At first I felt like a total dork for doing a workout DVD with my wife. Then I figured I would be twice as embarassed to do it in public, like at a gym. But at the end of the 30 minutes, I really felt like I had done some work. Pick it up and try it, it is cheaper than a gym membership.

I also committed to doing the LIVESTRONG 60 mile bike ride this fall. I have done 100 mile ride before, so I know what I am getting in to. I enjoyed riding the bike, however, it is tough to ride alone. I really do think tri-athletes are a little strange. They spend hours on that bike...alone. When you ride with a friend, you do a lot of BSing. I will keep you up to date on how I am doing. First thing I have to do is get my bike tuned up.

I'm leaving for New York on Thursday. Kind of a last minute thing, kind of not. It is a very long story that I will save for another day. I love New York. My dad grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In his words, "it was a terrible place for a kid to grow up." I can only imagine. I have heard that it was the heroin capital of the world back in the 60's and 70's. Anyway, what used to be a horrible place to grow up, is now very chic. I can't believe that people actually want to live, and pay big money to live at 10th and Ave C. Amazing. The city has gutted the interior of the place but kept the exterior the same. I love going back to that neighborhood. Amazing how it has changed. Every time Tricia and I visit New York, we always go by the neighborhood, then stop at a bar across from Tomkins Square Park. Rumor is the play "RENT" was written at that bar. Who knows, some guy sucking down gin and tonics told me that. I could have told him I was Shaquille O'Neil and he would have believed me.

Done Rambling.

Worlds greatest waitress

You may have heard that Tricia and I eat breakfast at Jims Resturant at 183 and McNeil every weekend. This is our favorite waitress, Kim. Sarah and Rose are great too. Gary is the manager. He always has a pack of smokes in his shirt pocket. Go to Jims, say hi to Kim.

Facial Cleanser

Hey everyone, I have received about 500 emails asking me what the name of the facial cleanser that Tricia got for $6.00 at Walgreens and loves. We are on vacation this week and it looks like Alex replayed this from a few months ago. So here you go: It is Purpose Gentle Facial Wash

Vaction Day 2

Whats on my mind:

Longhorns kick off the football season in 12 days. I was telling my wife the other day that I really don't care if I make it to the stadium for a game this year. I have grown to really feel uncomfortable in crowds. I absolutely hate it. I can't relax. An old friend of mine once asked me, "You know what is wrong with the world?" Before I could answer he said, "People, thats what is wrong with the world" I laughed at the time, but the older I get (I just turned 40) the more I realize he is right. The world was probably doing just fine until 'ol Adam and Eve showed up and spawned the bad driver, the loud person at the resturant, the cannonball guy at every public swimming pool, the smoker that throws their cigarette out the window of their car, and the thousands of other things I could list here, but won't, because I don't want this to be serious. Anyway, I don't plan on attending any Longhorn games this year. I will watch them from the comfort of my own home, where there is no line for a beer or the bathroom. Oh, and I can control the climate. I will throw on my Longhorn gear, I may even paint my face, but you have to come to my house to see it.
Does going to the game, spending a ton of money and fighting the crowd make you a bigger or better fan then the guy like me that would rather watch it at home alone? I don't think so. You are just a more patient person than I am. Now, lets do a little math. Lets say you go to a game. By the time it is all said and done, after singing Texas fight 100 times, being scared to death by the cannon after each score (I jump everytime they fire that thing, I know it is coming, but for some reason I always jump) and raising your horns up and singing "The Eyes of Texas." You have probably spent $200 (tickets, Parking, gas, tailgaiting, Schultz Garden) For your hard-earned $200, you are packed in to a seat too small for either of the Olsen Twins when they were still on Full House, you are hot, and chances are there is somone next to you that doesn't know the program. You know, the one that asks you to sit down, when the Horns are down 4 points and have the ball 4th and goal with 10 seconds left. You know, the person that goes to the bathroom every 5 minutes and the concession stand every 10, constantly making you lean back in your tiny little seat so they can get by. Or, my favorite, the guy that brings way to much whiskey in his boot for a 10am game. He is the guy that thinks this is the last Longhorn game ever and he isn't going to let the officials F$%&*%$ Screw his Mother effing, gd, Longhorns. I love that guy, I really love that guy when he brings his wife and baby to the game. That's a special mix. Babies LOVE Longhorn games. So for the 8 home game this year, you are going to shell out a minimum of $1600.00. For that money, I'll take the 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV.

DKR will have more Longhorn Football fans in it this year than ever before, thanks to the work in the north end zone. Come Early, wear orange, be loud, stay late. I'll do it too, but a long way away from DKR.

Go Horns.

Summer Vacation

We are taking some time off and will be back on the air Tuesday the 26th. Here are a few random thoughts.

Whre is all this rain the weather man is talking about? IT is 10:45am, sunday the 17th of August. Last night we got a shower that lasted 10 minutes, my wife and I were excited. Keep in mind, we have watched most of the cove that we live on, on Lake Travis slowly disappear over the last few months. We still have plenty of water, but the lake is so much better when it is full. So, by the time you read this, we may have plenty of rain, but so far, it ihas been a big disappointment.

What wasn't a dissapointment was Michael Phelps in the Olympics. This guy is amazing. He swam 8 events and won 8 gold medals AND set 7 World records. Talk about dedication. I love watching the Americans win. I wanty us to win EVERYTHING, just because.

My friend Autumn has a new CD out. It is called Velvet Sky and it is awesome. Go to www.autumnonline.com for more info.

Hopefully, we wil have some great news for all of you when we get back to work on the 26th. Thanks for listening.

August 11, 2008

I'm starting to count down the days to vacation. I know we took a week off last month, but we get alot of vacation after 12 years, so I may as well use it. My wife is going to Europe with Autumn, I'm not sure what I am doing. I will let you know when I know. I want to share with you a couple of charitites that I support and encourage you to check them out. Give if you want, no pressure here. The first one is the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation http://www.dmf.org/ Dikembe is a basketball player for the Houston Rockets, he is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa. I heard Dikembe doing a radio interview and heard about his goal to build a hospital in his hometown that will have 300 beds. He was so genuine about it and honest. He has give $15 Million of his own money toward the $29 Million project. That blew me away. He was on the radio asking if he could get 5,000 people to give $50. I gave my $50 and still do. I don't want to go all Bono on you guys, but this is s a pretty amazing place he has built. Just a couple of facts about DRC; Average Life Expectancy 42-47 Years, 20% of kids die before their fifth birthday, Infant mortality rate is 9.6% (In the US it is 0.6%) You can read more and help out if you want at the website I mentioned earlier.

The other one is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation http://www.cff.org/ This one is personal to me. My very first friend when I was 5 years old was my next door neighbor when I lived in California. His name was Gerald Fairchild and he had Cystic Fibrosis. Of course, as a kid I didn't know or care what he had. All I knew is that he was a good kickball player. But it was the first charity and disease I was ever exposed to. I remember going to the back bedroom of his house and seeing boxes and boxes of little cans with a slot for change in them. I guess they set them up at stores or went door to door asking for donations. Gerald died about 15 years ago, but I still think about him and wonder what he would be doing if a cure had been found.
I'm not really sure why I shared this stuff with you guys, it just kind of came out.

JB and I have some great news to share with everyone. We can't do it yet, but we have been working very hard on something that we think you will like. As soon as we CAN tell you we will.

Does This Ever Happen To You?

You are at someones home and they have some music playing, you notice that you like the music, you plan on asking your friends who it is, but then you have one more beer and forget. Well, it doesn't happen all the time, but it did happen to me last week. Have you ever tried to describe music? I have and I suck at it, but I am going to try and maybe you can help me by leaving a comment here. The music was definetly Latin, it was very cool guitar and there were no words. I guess that is call instrumental, I am no musicianbut I think I am right on that one. I am sure there are tons of musicians that do this type of music and that is all I am really looking for, a few of the ones that you know of, have heard, and you like. Thanks I appreciate it.

Do you remember a couple of months back when I wrote on this Blog that ratings weren't very good at the time, but that I was confident that they would come back. Well, they did. We have never been the type of show that brags about ratings, we think that is just bad karma and that it will eventually bite you in the butt. So, we had good ratings, we get to keep our jobs and everyone is happy. Thank you very much for listening.

I'm watching the PGA Championship and rooting for my friend, Rich Beem. Man, you would think playing golf for a living would be a breeze. I have seen upclose what Rich goes through and it is not easy. Lots of travel, lots of stress, lots of time away from home. But the rewards are great.

Hey what do you know, the hi temp today was over 100.

I am almost there

Here is the trick I have been working on for almost tw summers. I am really close, but I thought you might like to see what it really looks like before I show you mine.

Random Stuff

I want to see Batman, I don't want to wait in line forever to do so. When will the lines die down? I guess I don't want to see it that bad or I would stand in line.

Just got back from a Morning Show Conference in Denver. Here is what I learned; If you don't have talent, just be loud, really loud and rude. That is what I took away from one of the sessions I attended. Make other people look and feel bad while making yourself look good. Oh, I'm not talking about on the air, I'm talking about people in the same room with you, that are attending the same conference as you. I swear it took every ounce of self-control I had to not unload one particular guy. Looking back I am glad I didn't, he just wasn't worth it.

Tropical Storm Eduard is on his way. I am concerned about the people on the coast, but I hope that thing makes it to Central Texas and sits here for a few days. Some flooding in the Hill Country would be great for Lake Travis. Not good for those in the Hill Country, but I don't live in the Hill Country so I have to hope for it.

"Entourage" starts next month. I am ready for it. I am watching reruns every week and I am still not tired of it. I actually caught an episode yesterday that I had not seen.

Longhorns have started football practice. Can you believe the first game is August 30th? Classes start soon that means the traffic will be back.

Tricia leaves for Europe with her girlfriend, Autumn in just over two weeks. Its a last hurrah of sorts for her. Hopefully, when she gets back, she can get pregnant. I will keep you updated on that.
